Kamakshi Child Home

Last Saturday,21st February 2009 it was YC's second charity visit. Youth Cares went to an orphanage in Kulim called Kamakshi Child Home.We left Penang around 2.00pm and started our journey to Kulim but before going to Kulim,we picked up Swarna from Juru rest house after her school activity (hence, she is wearing school uniform in the pictures). After picking her up, we continued our journey to Nithiya's house. This time is Nithiya's turn to choose an orphanage.
We left Nithiya's house around 3.45 pm. Nithiya and her family drove us there. As soon as we reached,we took pictures of the home and not forgetting the wonderful children too. We started to mingle around. While some of us were talking with the kids, the adults and Swarna had a little tour around the home from Ms.Kamala, the home's administrator.
Ms.Kamala gave a brief history about the home and their future plans for the home. The home was started in 2005, occupying one house. Today, the home has expanded and occupies 3 houses. Currently, the home is running based on donations by individuals and corporate companies. Yet, the homes still needs funding in order to provide better accommodations and rehabilitation facilities for the children.

At 4.oo pm Ms.Kamala invited us to join the children for tea break. During tea break, YC team members served and joked around with the children. The children were served with various type of tit bits with tea. After the tea break, the childrens went to freshen up themselves. It was really fascinating to see such a big home managed by one caretaker. Really amazing!!!! We also had some chit-chatting with the disabled. There were at least 2-4 disabled children.

At 6.00pm,we said thank you to the caretaker and took our leave. Lastly,we went home with an open heart and a wide smile.

January 2009

Youth Cares officially kicked off our very first charity project for the year, this inaugural project of the team was on 17th of January 2009 (Saturday). We started off by travelling at 4pm to the orphanage, where some of us travelled from Kulim, Air Itam. Eventhough, this project was organised by the kids for the kids, our parents chipped in by providing transport. Thank you!!
This orphanage, Rumah Kebajikan Seri Cahaya is situated in Permatang Damar Laut nearby the Penang International Airport, was chosen to get things rolling. By the time we arrived there, it was tea time and we proceeded to see the warden to explain the objective of our visit & the project on the whole. The warden appreciated our visit and invited us to join them for tea. But we took that opportunity to serve the children tea & biscuits. The children were over whelmed when we started serving them , because their daily routine was to q-up and get their food. After serving them, we had one to one time with kids.
In conjunction with our visit, we also bought some goodies for the children - milk, biscuits, rice, cooking oil, beverages, and rice noodles.
The person-in-charge of the orphanage brought us around the orphanage and there he showed us their prayer room. That is where the children pray and meditate. Their prayer room was very inviting and had a sense of peace, you can easily rest your mind by meditating there. After that,we left the orphanage around 5.45pm.
